The Integration for ESRI ArcGIS Desktop gives ArcInfo, ArcEditor and ArcView users the ability to link documents to locations on maps stored in an ArcSDE Spatial Data Server. The integration provides an easy-to-use toolbar in the ArcGIS Desktop environment for query, point-and-click retrieval and archiving of documents related to map features.

How It Works
Users are able to analyze geographic data and seamlessly retrieve and archive documents, all from a single interface. A process that normally would have required a user to manually search through thousands of hard-copy documents for a single address or location can now be performed by a simple mouse-click. The Integration for ESRI ArcGIS Desktop enables users to define virtual relationships between map feature attributes and document keywords to create dynamic links. Users can also create static links between map objects and documents if necessary. Once links are established, any user with appropriate security access can select an area on a map to obtain all documents attached to that feature regardless of the type of link (static or dynamic) that exists. If users have electronic content (e.g., Microsoft® Word files, images, video, etc.) that needs to be associated to a map, they can archive it directly into a document repository from within the ArcGIS Desktop, and it will be automatically associated to a selected map feature. Because content is tied to a location, retrieval time is measured in seconds rather than days. Previously, users would have to manually search for the supporting documents they need to make informed decisions. With this solution, those same documents are more readily available and decisions can be made more quickly.
